Heartbreak as dog shot in yard
Tuesday, 16 October 2007
She has been sickened by the callous act which saw one of her four papillon dogs killed.

Police expressed concern a firearm has been discharged in the urban area and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Mrs Paasi was also offering a reward of $500 to anyone with information that will lead to the perpetrator being caught and charged

The dog was thought to have been shot between 9.30am and 10am on Saturday at the back section on Le Cren Street.

She was on the phone when she heard the dogs barking on Saturday morning.

"I was on a toll call but I went out the front of the house to see if anyone was there.

"Normally when the dogs are barking I bring them in, but I finished my phone call first and then went and called them."

Only the three girls came when she called, so she went out to find where Freddie was.

"I walked around the section and found him lying dead in the back yard.

"I just don't understand what kind of sicko would do that to a dog that has never bitten anyone in his life."

The back section was only accessible by a long drive from Le Cren Street, and visible from a long drive coming from Wilson Street.

Freddie was worth around $5000 as a breeding pup. The other dogs which were effectively his daughters and granddaughter had fretted since he had died.

"They are really clingy and not their outgoing selves."

She had taken Freddie to the vet for an autopsy and was told the wound was too big to be just from a slug gun.

"It has gone in his back and come out through his stomach. They said it would have killed him straight away.

"The dogs are my only companions and I feel safer with them around.

"I just can't stop crying about it."

Mid and South Canterbury police district commander Dave Gaskin said the incident was a cause for concern.

"Any shooting of anything in town is always a concern.

"We seek the assistance of the public. Someone must know something and should have enough moral fortitude to come forward."
