Police dog stabbed during chase
Wednesday, 25 July 2007
A police dog is receiving medical treatment after it was stabbed several times overnight.

Police said today the dog, called Cane, was expected to live but was getting treatment for at least three or four stab wounds.

Inspector Gary Hill said the dog was stabbed during an incident which began during a police chase of a stolen car near Rotorua.

The stolen car was driven into a forest at Murupara and the six occupants fled.

Police with dogs chased the six men but during the chase Cane was stabbed several times.

"After a chase, for about half an hour on foot, one of the police dogs was stabbed three or four times," Mr Hill said.

Two of the men were taken into custody but four others were still on the loose, he said.

"The dog is going to be all right. It is going to live," he said.

Police dog handler Constable Jason Owen was wearing body armour and was not hurt when Cane was stabbed.

However, the incident showed how police dog handlers throughout the country were "at the sharp end of the stick" and could face a highly dangerous situation within moments, said acting Inspector Greg Sparrow, Rotorua's area tactical response manager.

He said Cane was stabbed with a knife and spent the night in a vet's surgery.

"The Rotorua dog handlers do a marvellous job and I would say they are second to none around the country," Mr Sparrow said.

He said the Kane was due to be retired soon and Constable Owen was training another dog as a replacement. The pair were named best in the country in 2005.
